Mechanical Shop Foreman, I

BASIC FUNCTION:

Oversees certain functions and activities of the Maintenance Department, supervising and coordinating technical resources to support area maintenance department, providing leadership and human resource management, resolving problems and issues as they arise; overseeing safety performance, maintenance/reliability of units. Responsible for the documentation, communication, coordination and assignment of jobs for the mechanical shop.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Oversees quality of work, safety and overall performance of assigned staff
  • Plans, organizes and oversees all work schedules for assigned employees
  • Assists engineering as needed
  • Coordinates with scheduling equipment for repairs, and construction and developing work plans
  • Tracks headcount and verifies timesheets to ensure cost and schedule compliance
  • Performs on-call duties
  • Leads safety discussions and demonstrate leadership behavior that reinforces safety policies and culture
  • Coordinates, tracks and reports on jobs, within the mechanical shop, to ensure jobs are completed on time and to the highest level of quality
  • Audit job sites to ensure safe work practices
  • Lead the morning team meeting
  • Oversee, lead and participate in repairs for T/A or Critical Equipment as assigned
  • Coach, train and mentor craftsmen on proper repair technique, repair documentation, equipment function, maintenance and operation, as well as industry standards and best practices
  • Provide recommendations for proper repair scope
  • Assist with troubleshooting as needed
  • Advise supervision of any personnel issues that may arise
  • Assist in the development of improved repair techniques and tooling
  • Assist in and provide guidance for startup of rotating equipment after repairs
  • Participate in RCFAs for fixed equipment

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of five years of related on-the-job experience and a significant amount of energy industry experience is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Six years of increasing experience in repair of refinery fixed equipment.

Formal training and certification as Rigging and Signal Person.

Formal training and certification as Industrial Crane operator

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Knowledge of refinery operations/maintenance. Proven interpersonal skills. Self-starter and safety sensitive. Troubleshooting skills and ability to function effectively in a team atmosphere. Basic reading and writing skills. The ability to perform basic level mathematical calculations. A strong background in fixed equipment maintenance, excellent organizational, communication and decision-making skills.

Ability to interpret P&IDs and Isometric drawings.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the supervision of up to 20 employees.

WORK CONDITIONS:

Petroleum refinery based, industrial environment including but not limited to, load noise and vibrations, working near moving mechanical parts and/or rotating equipment, petroleum products, chemicals, pressure valves, and/or tanks and exposure to risk of electric shock. Exposed too indoor and outdoor environments including warehouse/plant environments. Must be available to work in a flexible schedule including after hours and weekend on call schedule (e.g. rotating shifts, call outs). Subject to all weather conditions, wet and humid conditions, close confined spaces.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job conditions require sitting, walking, standing, talking or hearing, lifting or carrying and pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs., climbing up to 200 ft., making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling working in confined spaces or other strenuous physical activity; ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, and valid State driver's license and proof of insurance required. Job conditions require ability to wear PPE in emergency situations (beards not permitted)

Basic Function

Comply with health, safety and environmental regulations.

Job Duties
  • Oversees quality of work, safety, and overall performance of assigned staff
  • Plans, organizes and oversees all work schedules for assigned employees
  • Assists engineering as needed
  • Coordinates with operations in scheduling equipment for repairs, and construction (depending on assignment), and developing work plans
  • Provides training, mentorship and coaching for subordinates and peers

May be required to do some or all of the following:

  • Monitors and enforces contractor compliance to all refinery safety and environmental regulations
  • Participates in contract negotiations
  • Tracks head count and verifies timesheets to ensure cost and schedule compliance
  • Performs on-call duties
  • Issues confined space work permits
  • Orders plant instrument process controls and indicators
  • Inputs and closes I&E and MDI work orders and generate requisitions
  • Supervises relief to other maintenance management personnel
  • Oversees department's yearly budget
  • Maintains all electrical and instrumentation equipment in the plant, offices and maintenance shops
  • Directs operational personnel on computer screen controls
  • Leads safety discussions and demonstrate leadership behavior that reinforces safety policies and culture
  • Oversees electrical and instrument maintenance, work conduit and electrical wiring for motor controls for both AC & DC voltage, and lifting, hauling, pumping, etc., service for all maintenance foremen and operations

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience

A minimum of seven years of related job experience is required.

Education Level

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience, is required.

Required Skills

Knowledge of refinery operations. Specific craft knowledge. Proven interpersonal skills. Self-starter and safety sensitive. Troubleshooting skills and ability to function effectively in a team atmosphere. May require special training depending on craft and location: Eng Was (188 Montana) Station Configuration/Fiber Optics, Electrical & Instrumentation, Laser alignment, compressors, welding and equipment operation. A significant amount of experience working with job related equipment is essential. The ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication. Basic reading and writing skills. The ability to perform basic level mathematical calculations.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Journeyman Electrical License and equipment operation CDC (190 Artesia & UT) is preferred, depending on craft and location. May require certification in any or all of the following depending on craft and location: Certification in Level II ISA, Journeyman Electrical License, Crane and Rigging Inspector Certification, etc., Measurement & Controls, Fundamental of Management/Supervisor, Control System & P/C geared for ABB (Bailey)(188 Montana) Configuration.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

Responsible for the supervision of up to 15 employees. May be responsible for oversight of up to 50 contract employees.
